After more than three years of trying, David finally realized his dream of becoming the first person to free climb the infamous Compressor Route on Patagonia's Cerro Torre. The 22-year-old conquered the east face of the 3,128m-high mountain using only mobile devices to secure his route after bolts from a previous attempt had been removed. David free climbed for 24 hours and despite a few falls and freezing conditions, pitched a bivouac on the Ice Towers of Cerro Torre, along with climbing partner Peter Ortner, ahead of his final assault on the summit the following morning.

You do not need to be a climber to watch and enjoy this climbing documentary.

Extraordinary footage of big wall climbing (both from a helicopter and cameraman who rappelled down from above) coupled with fascinating characters and an insights into the ethics and drama of big wall climbing technique over the years.

Bridwell won't concede his legendary status, but...

This kid is good!! Great rock climbing doc! Especially if you like free climbing. David Lama is a name to watch, for sure. Eventually his name will become legend. Bridwell comes across as a curmudgeonly has-been -- mad at the world, and still a legend in his own mind. He was a legend, back in the day. But c'mon. Admit that these up and comers have chops. I don't know anything about David Lama other than what was portrayed in this film, so I can't say if he's "tainted" (as another reviewer wrote), or not. I do think Lama learned something in his attempts at scaling Cerro del Torre. Mainly that climbing in a gym and climbing a real rock tower takes a combination of skills. The kid is young. I expect to see more firsts from him.

The film itself was very well done. Amusing in parts, combined with breathtaking scenery and amazing shots from the helo. Then you really got the sense of how isolated and lonely Patagonia is (windy too!). This was a fun watch.

An interesting piece of the more recent history of this climb and the most recent generation to attempt it. Worth watching for the photography of the final free climb alone.
