No conventional sports documentary, THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI examines how one of the most celebrated sports champions of the 20th century risked his fame and fortune to follow his faith and conscience. Outspoken and passionate in his beliefs, Ali found himself in the center of America's controversies over race, religion, and war.

The real deal!

My hat's off to director Bill Segel, his treatment of the narrative was refreshingly truthful and scholarly. Exceptional documentary!

Least they Whitewash Ali’s Legacy ....

We’ve seen it happen before. For all of his amazing work and achievements, the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., is now forever remembered only for the “I have a dream” speech. He is rarely remembered for his opposition to the war in Vietnam or his Poor People’s Campaign — topics that are not palatable now, or then, with mainstream America. Instead, “I have a dream” is a safe way to remember MLK. MLK’s legacy has, in a word, been whitewashed.

The memory of the late, great, Muhammad Ali is vulnerable to the same fate. Many tributes on his passing focused on Ali’s boxing acumen, and precious little else. Luckily, this movie, The Trials of Muhammad Ali, exists and reminds us all of the REAL Muhammad Ali and why he was the Greatest Champion of All Time, or simply, The Greatest.

The documentary traces the life and career of Muhammad Ali. It makes mention of Ali’s sports career, but does not focus on it. It focuses more on Ali’s political development. Special emphasis is given to Ali’s opposition to the Vietnam War. It is hard to image just how dramatic was Ali’s opposition to the war. When Ali voiced his opposition to the Vietnam War, it was not great move to make career-wise. War resisters were a marginalized portion of the population, and opposition had not reach the levels which existed later in the Nixon administration. Ali’s opposition to the war was more unpopular than his religious convictions.

The film also looks at Ali’s interest in and conversion to Islam. The film especially examined Ali’s friendship and relationship with Malcolm X. This documentary examines that relationship and Ali’s devotion to Islam in depth. When Ali passed, most obituaries which chose to mention it, mentioned Ali’s relationship to Islam in passing.

If there is any aspect of Ali’s life which is examined in passing, it is his sports career. The documentary features Ali’s fights to be sure, with Liston, Patterson, or whomever. The fights however are treated as brief interludes to Ali’s political, religious, and social life.

The archival material — Ali’s interviews, newsreels, speeches, fights; interviews with Ali’s contemporaries, from contemporary and other sources — is simply awesome. There is even videotape of a Broadway show, believe it or not, which featured Ali in the starring role and which ran while he was prohibited from the boxing. The show bombed.

It was the only thing in his life which did. Ali was an accomplished athlete, arguably the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. His social consciousness, conviction and activism matched his considerable athletic skills. This documentary looks at every aspect of the amazing life of Ali, the total person. No whitewash here.
